Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to search for factors affecting hospital nurses¡¯ turnover intention in Korea.

Method: The participants were 13 nurses who had experienced at least one turnover. All interview data were collected using two MP3 recorders. Giorgi¡¯s method was used for data collection and analysis.

Results: The following five categories have been found: 1) Personal field: financial status, inability to overcoming crisis, other unexplainable feelings 2) Potential field: task which doesn¡¯t help improve one¡¯s development, lack of opportunity for personal future, more important life than the one in the current organization, 3) Managerial field: lack of role models, lack of manager¡¯s leadership, conflicts because of manager¡¯s concern, 4) Organizational field: low position of nursing division, conflict with other departments, limits of systemic supports and 5) Professional field in nursing: severity of the task, working conditions, limits of improvement in professional practice.

Conclusion: The result of this study may contribute to furnishing information useful in managing hospital nurses, and ultimately may help decrease the turnover intention of hospital nurses.
